When the weather turns cold, the last thing that’s probably on your mind is what your family will be doing next summer. Why think about June when you’re in the middle of planning your Thanksgiving feast? You might be surprised to know there are a few good reasons to start shopping early for summer camps and programs. Even if you’re in the early stages of planning for next year, we think you should begin mulling over your options. Here are just a few of the reasons why you need to start shopping early for summer camps and programs.
There Are Limited Spots Available
Is there a certain camp you know your child wants to attend? Whether it’s a music camp or something specializing in sports, most of the country’s top programs have a limited number of spots available. Many of these highly sought after places will reach maximum capacity long before the school year lets out. That’s why you shouldn’t wait until it starts to feel warmer outside before you start the shopping process. Are there literally thousands of summer camps out there? Sure, but if your child is only interested in one or two camps, you can’t really counter by offering to send him some place about which he’s never heard. Want to send your daughter to that elite music institute? Look over the application as early as you can. We understand not everyone can plan as early as others, but as soon as you have a pretty good idea of what you’re looking for, get to it.
You Could Save a Lot of Money
When it comes to our kids, pretty much everything is expensive. Childcare, private school tuition, or just putting food on the table each night, it doesn’t matter what your situation is. You just know you could use a friendly discount here and there, right? Choosing to shop early for summer camps and programs gives you the best chance to save money.
Think of it like the college admissions process. You’ve got all of these scholarships, deductions, and ways to waive out-of-state tuition fees. While there are many ways to save money at the collegiate level, these resources dry up the closer you get to the start of school. In the same way, not only are there scholarships available at most elite summer camps and programs, but many will even offer some kind of early bird discount just for signing up early. Even if you have to pay the full cost for attending such camps, you will most likely be able to set up a payment plan that is more affordable than forking over the full cost in the late spring.
Shopping at the Last Minute Limits Your Choices
As we mentioned earlier in this post, waiting until the last minute means you’re risking the possibility of there being very few open spots at nearby camps. This is not only bad news for your child, who may have had his heart set on a specific place, but you’ll be on the hook trying to find a suitable summer camp for him with little to no time to spare. What do you think the chances are of you finding the perfect fit under such constraints? When we feel rushed to make decisions at restaurants or stores, the end result is often not the same as what we would have done given more time. The same is true for shopping summer camps.
Research is Always Your Friend
What’s wrong with having a little more information? Thanks to review sites and the nature of being online, we do more research on the things we buy than just about anyone in history ever could have thought possible. You could be looking for dog food, big screen TVs, or a new car and there are probably a dozen websites aimed at helping you make those decisions. While you don’t have to get the equivalent of a doctorate in the subject, you should take advantage of information available online to make the best choice for you and your family. Starting the shopping process early allows you to do as much (or as little) research as you like, all while not feeling pressured into a quick decision.
Not All Summer Camps and Programs Are the Same
What kind of experience do you want for your kids this summer? Is any summer camp okay or do you want them to part of the best institutions available? Not every summer camp can meet the needs of your child as efficiently or specifically as one another. If you’re looking for a music camp with Christian beliefs, you may not be interested in a sports camp with no religious background. If your child has specific interests only met by a certain number of camps, shopping early can help you make sure to connect her with those summer programs.
Speaking on the varieties of camps available doesn’t even bring into account that some camps are clearly better than others when it comes to counselors, facilities, programming, and more. If any old camp will do for your family, waiting until the last minute may not be so bad; however, if you want the best of the best, you better start the application process early.
Planning Early Gives You Peace of Mind
We’re sure you’ll agree there’s enough stress already inherent in the role of a parent. Between making sure the kids get fed, the lights stay on, and you keep your sanity, there doesn’t need to be much else to occupy your mind. Give yourself a break by getting out ahead of the situation and finding a summer destination for your kids. If you’re anything like us, being able to cross an item off the to-do list is one of the biggest joys in life. Why not take the time to cross this one off early?
It Gives Kids Something to Which They Can Look Forward
As a parent, you want to give your kids special events and treats they can look forward to in anticipation. It can be something as big as Christmas or as small as a cone of ice cream. Whether you want to use these as incentives for good behavior or simply to put a smile on your kid’s face it up to you. By shopping early for the best camps and programs (and thus securing the spot your child wants most), you can give your son or daughter something to look forward to during the months in between. Although not the most practical of our reasons to shop early for summer camps, this is a nice bonus for your kids.
