As parents, we want to find the best options for our kids. Whether that means finding the most highly acclaimed school in our area or planning a healthy meal schedule at home, it’s all about setting up the next generation of our family for success. This also translates to hobbies and skills. Many kids want to learn how to play a musical instrument, a pursuit that still lingers in the minds of today’s adults. Where’s the best place to start? Which are the most popular instruments for kids to play? We want to help you and your kid(s) make an informed choice. Here are some of the most popular instruments for kids to play.
Piano / Keyboard
Starting off with the absolutely most popular instrument for kids to play is piano and keyboard. The piano has been with us for roughly 300 years, during which time it has been played by nearly all of the most famous musicians and composers. From Bach and Beethoven to your sons and daughters, learning to play the piano is a priceless investment in music education. Not that other instruments don’t have plenty to teach on the subject, but pianos offer an intricate look at what makes music and instill patience and the ability to concentrate on the player. Pianos can be a costly pursuit in both money and real estate, but keyboards have opened the door for a new generation to make its mark on the world of music. These keyed instruments are among the greatest in the world and offer a variety of possibilities in today’s music culture.
Another one of the most popular instruments for kids to play is the guitar. For many young people, learning to play the guitar can be a very easy sales pitch. Iconic images of shredding heavy metal rockers have made the guitar emerge as one of the “cool” instruments for young musicians. Whether your child pursues the acoustic, bass, or electric guitar, they will be joining a large number of fellow musicians on the journey of perfecting guitar play. Like some of the other most popular instruments for kids to play found on our list, guitars are easy to transport, fairly cheap for beginners, and not too tough on first-timers. It’s a great instrument for anyone who wants to play music from the last half-century for a number of reasons and so many others have walked this path that there are a seemingly infinite amount of materials to help kids learn.
Violin - Most Popular Instruments for Kids to Play
Is there anything more beautiful than the sound of a stringed instrument like the violin in the hands of a master? While your child may be a few years away from being confused for a master, the violin is a wonderful choice for kids of all ages. With that being said, this instrument is probably best started well before your son or daughter begins middle school. Starting early is always a good plan when talking music lessons and the complexities of violin are better worked through sooner rather than later. This is a great way to work on a young person’s coordination, as the different combinations between the bow and strings force the player to think quickly.
Moving away from some of the more obvious choices, but still in the realm of today’s most popular instruments for kids to play, we have the saxophone. Although these instruments may be too heavy for some young kids, saxophones come in a variety of sizes that work best with different age groups. An alto saxophone works great for players around the age of 7 or 8, but later on they may feel more comfortable with a tenor or baritone instrument. This fun choice for kids can be used in several capacities from marching bands to wind orchestras and everything in between. If your child wants to be different from the other young musicians, a woodwind instrument like the saxophone would be a nice start.
Does your child like making noise and unleashing his energy? Not to stereotype too much, but the drums may just be perfect. Playing the drums is a wonderful way for young people to express themselves and engage in some healthy exercise for both body and mind. To be a great drummer requires excellent coordination because you’re likely to use all four of your limbs in the process. It can also be an activity which will help a young person master rhythm, a good quality to have in any area of music or dance. Drums and percussion are used in essentially every part of modern music, so learning these skills allows for a young person to choose between several concentrations later on. Even if your child decides to play another instrument, we bet they’d still like to sit behind a set and fool around for a while.
Recorder - Most Popular Instruments for Kids to Play
Maybe you want your kids to start small before investing in a piano or a drum kit. That’s where something as simple as a recorder can be perfect. These instruments have origins from many centuries ago and the modern equivalent is used by millions of kids in music programs around the country. If you’re not sure if your child will take to music lessons, the recorder is an easy introduction. Things may progress to where you and your child feel more confident. In that case, you may want to move on to the flute, clarinet, or similar woodwind instruments.
Another one of the most popular instruments for kids to play, especially when just starting out, is the xylophone. For kids who are not quite ready to pick up a violin or learn the piano, the xylophone is a fun apparatus to let them get to know. Like the recorder, xylophones are good for teaching basic music skills and are most often used for simple songs such as nursery rhymes. This is a fantastic education tool for kids in the 3-5 range, but it has also been used in more mature settings historically.
These are a few of the most popular instruments for kids to play, but you may decide on one of the other great instruments available. We wish you the best of luck when it comes to finding the music education that works best for you and your family.
