We had an amazing time at Camp Electric in 2019, but one of our campers had an even better summer by receiving a special gift from Darren Mulligan of We Are Messengers. Brienna is a 15-year-old guitar player who earned a special slot at this year’s camp thanks to an annual contest put on by the WAY-FM radio network.

What is this Camp Electric Contest?

Sometimes we at Camp Electric have the ability to connect talented young people with famous musicians at little to no cost. This is all thanks to a series of contests, discounts, and scholarships put on by our wonderful sponsors and partners as well as everyday people who believe in what we’re doing each summer.

For the last several years, Camp Electric has partnered with The Wally Show on WAY-FM for the “Rock What Ya Got” contest. This competition allows for fans to nominate individual musicians to experience a free week at Camp Electric. Along with their general information, potential finalists provide a video performance of their work. Once the nominees have been established, listeners of the show can vote daily on which young person they’d like to see come to camp on a full scholarship. One winner is chosen for this honor and in 2019 that person was a teenager named Brienna.

The 15-year-old has had a compelling life story in such a short amount of time. She's had to overcome a number of family issues and setbacks along the way. As it happens for many young musicians, Brienna found an escape through music which has allowed her to express herself and find a belonging. Without money for some big fancy guitar, Brienna has been making do with a $10 guitar found at Goodwill. Based on all of this information and more, we were thrilled to host her for a week at Camp Electric upon winning the “Rock What Ya Got” contest.

What was the Surprise from We Are Messengers?

After spending a week at Camp Electric, the young musician received a FaceTime call from The Wally Show on WAY-FM where she chatted with the hosts about her time at camp. Some of the best parts of Camp Electric, according to Brienna, were the insights shared with her about the music industry and the music-filled atmosphere where campers would constantly be jamming out or worshiping together. This call was more than just a simple interview, however, as the hosts of The Wally Show had a friend they wanted to bring out to speak with Brienna.

We Are Messengers was one of several groups to make an appearance at Camp Electric in 2019 and it heard about her gear situation. The band wanted to help the 15-year-old feel more confident in her playing abilities by gifting her a brand new acoustic guitar. Lead singer Darren sat in on the interview and shared a few laughs with the contest winner before sharing the big news. To make the moment even more special, the singer performed a live acoustic rendition of We Are Messengers’ hit song “Maybe It’s Ok” using Brienna’s new teal-colored instrument. You can check it all out in the video below.

Why Should I Come to Camp Electric?

These days there are so many great resources for teenagers who want to learn how to play an instrument. Online videos, subscription websites, and more services have joined the long list of tried and true methods for educating oneself. You can find several ways to teach yourself how to play, but now we have an incredible opportunity for young musicians to learn how to improve and become a lifelong lover of playing music. Better than YouTube and grander in scale than your typical lesson plan, Camp Electric is a place for young musicians to come together and learn from career players who know what it takes to make it as a musician.

We’re not saying there’s anything wrong with taking lessons or watching instructional videos online. Those are great things to do on your own, but sometimes you need something special to breathe new life into the subject you love. Camp Electric is like a fun boot camp where a young person can join hundreds of similarly-minded people to learn more about music and where it intersects with faith. The connections made at camp are the kind that remind us of why we fell in love with music in the first place. Our favorite songs have the ability to speak to us at a personal level while also bringing us together with so many other people.

Camps have long been part of young people’s summer calendar, offering the chance to get out and do something fun and enriching. Camp Electric has all of this, plus the opportunity to learn about faith and musicianship in an environment you’d have a tough time replicating anywhere else. Oh, and did we mention the nightly concerts performed by today’s biggest Christian bands? Some of the artists to come and entertain campers over the last several years include TobyMac, Rend Collective, Riley Clemmons, Hollyn, Tauren Wells, and Newsboys.

For more than ten years, Camp Electric has been proud to develop the next generation of musical talent through classroom sessions, workshops, mentoring, and engaging speakers. Students like Brienna, this year’s “Rock What Ya Got” winner, are why we do what we do. We want to equip young Christian musicians with the skills and life experience needed to impact their communities and make a mark on the music scene.
